3 Amigos session

3 Amigos – 3 perspectives

With a 3 Amigos session, you create a common understanding of the work to be done. Less confusion or misunderstandings make development run more smoothly. This results in fewer bugs and a satisfactory result for everyone involved!

What are the 3 Amigos? Imagine three perspectives on the project, all of which provide different but necessary information on a requirement. These three roles are: Product owner or business analyst, developer and tester or QA manager.

The aim of the 3 Amigos is to gain a common understanding of a requirement or user story and to ensure its quality. This means it can be implemented and there is agreement on which tests are necessary.

3 Amigos does not mean that there have to be exactly three people. The Amigos can be represented by several project participants. Other amigos can also be involved, e.g. UX managers. In this way, the user perspective can also be included in the requirements profile.

The 3 roles of an agile project

Before development begins, these roles discuss the previously specified requirements and incorporate their perspectives from the respective specialist area:

The Product Owner is interested in fulfilling the organization’s goals and reflecting them in the requirements.

The developers know how they can implement these goals technically and, among other things, what information they need to do so.

The testers have a feel for what could go wrong and how to test.

Aims and procedure of a 3 Amigos session

The roles meet in a 3 Amigos session (also known as a specification workshop) to discuss this. This meeting does not take place at regular intervals, such as the sprint planning meeting in Scrum projects. Instead, you schedule it when it is necessary – usually before the requirements are implemented. Finally, the story can be considered in the next sprint planning meeting.
